Pros: I’ve had this switch for about a year and a half. It has worked great the entire time. Noticable improvement over a 100Mb network, especially with a local file server. Have been able to reach 60% to 70% of the network capacity (~70MB/s) with a single file transfer, but at that point the computers/hard drive are the limiting factors. Cons: Maybe shoulda got a switch with more jacks, but this was a great buy! Hasn’t failed yet after 1.5 years of use. I’ll expect the power adapter to go first, might be a good idea to keep a spare on hand. Doesn’t come with any cool features like Traffic shaper, web management and such. Just a great basic switch. Overall Review: Outstanding Product for what it is designed for.

Pros: Good price, gigabit, small form factor, AC adapter is the ‘sideways’ type that doesn’t block other plugs, works as expected. Cons: Toasty – these things run hot. After just a couple minutes plugged in, they are almost too hot to comfortably rest your hand on. I wouldn’t stack them directly on top of each other. LED indicators are above the ports on one side, while the AC plug is on the back, so no matter how you position the device, it’s awkward. Overall Review: Automatically handles crossover; you can attach two of them together with either a normal or crossover cable and it works either way.

Pros: No fan, nice small blue case. Cons: Not reliable for business use. Overall Review: Paid $20 to advance replace first unit. Replacement arrived and worked until under load then continues to drop packets. Replacement does recover after about 30 seconds of no load unlike first unit which required a power cycle. Next step was to replace GS116 with older Netgear Gs108 and ALL symptoms / problems are gone. Netgear is requiring us to prove failure under a dedicated 2 machine ping test before talking further. We’ve already swapped hardware and fixed the symptom. Final thought, Unless Netgear can show a hardware fault with the unit it may be time to find another vendor. We can’t have our reputation held hostage by Netgear for $100 price difference from better vendor.

Pros: Still a fast switch, when it works. Cons: Seven months on and the replacement switch (see review from Dec, 2009) is not working right. Plugging in certain NICs (e.g. NetGear GA311 or anything with an RTL8111 in it) causes all the lights to blink and no pings on any port. Will only link up to a GS108 at 100 Mbps. Will only link up to some NICs at 10 Mbps. Plugging in a Slug (NSLU2) works for a while and then stops (admittedly, it is a competitor’s product). Tired of using an FS108 as well as the GS116 to get everything working. Overall Review: Called Netgear for a second RMA. This time, got a support person who spoke real English and understood networks. No arguments about there being a problem. He opined that it was probably a bad capacitor. Gave me an RMA and we’re in business. Fifteen minutes from start to finish with no discernable hold time. Wow! What an improvement in support. Incidentally, I have a GS108 that I replaced the capacitors on, the day I got it. Still working like a champ, after 3 years. Maybe that’s the way to go. Maybe Netgear should seriously think about using better capacitors from the get go. Personally, I like Netgear switches but I’m not sure I’d recommend them to someone who wants flawless operation. The lifetime guarantee is still holding, though.

Pros: Nice metal casing. Appears well made. Cons: Warranty is a joke. AC adapters fail and they want $27 for replacements. Lifetime – yea right. Overall Review: Its a shame that this company has stooped to this level. I remember highly recommending their gear to clients.

Pros: Worked fine for 2.5 years Cons: Quit working after 2.5 years. Power supply (wall wart) failed. Overall Review: Wall Wart failures seem to be a common problem based on the reviews here.

Pros: Worked well for a long time. Cons: Just died, can’t get Netgear to honor the warranty Overall Review: Purchased from Newegg on 02/26/2006. Has run since then without issues. Area is well ventilated. Always ran cool. Home environment. Just died. Looks like a power supply problem. Called Netgear and they said “out of warranty.”
