Pros: Plug and Play… Follow instructions, and it works like it should Indicator lights… Two lights for each port: 100Mbs / 1Gbs Plus Features… Key features of a managed switch Cons: none Overall Review: So far this device is working like described, and just like I had hoped. I have not used any of the Plus features yet (Cable Diagnostics, QoS, etc.) So if I run into trouble, I may update my rating. But out of the box, it works like I would expect a switch to work. Note: I’m pretty new to networking, so keep that in mind. Managing features of a router or switch are pretty low on my priority list.

Pros: Great device, easy to setup and run. It runs pretty cool, the case hasn’t got warm yet. Has had the desired speed increase from using a desktop hub. Cons: None.

Pros: Works so far Cons: None so far Overall Review: In case buyers are confused about the difference between GS108 and GS108E (the Plus version), let me explain. The Plus switch is not an update, but rather a feature-enhanced version. If you do not need VLAN or QoS, you probably don’t need the Plus version. VLAN is a method of LAN segmentation in which a tag is added to data packets so that VLAN-aware devices can limit the distribution of those packets to only a subset of the ports. In effect, the switch can then act as it it was multiple switches, each on a different physical segment of the LAN. The ports on the Plus switches can be configured to assign or remove the VLAN tags to maintain that virtual segmentation. (Generally, one also uses other devices, such as VLAN-aware routers and WiFi access points when implementing VLANs — not just a single VLAN switch.) QoS is a method of giving priority to certain types of data streams, particularly video streams and VoIP phone calls, where stutter-free presentation requires that the packets arrive in order and in a timely manner. By contrast, file transfers, Web surfing, printing, etc. do not benefit from such prioritization because the timing order of their packets does not observably affect performance. Again, if you do not intend to use either of those features, there is little reason to get the Plus switch. (Unless, of course, you prefer the color of the housing.)

Pros: Port Mirroring Browser Access other great features as well, but mainly bought for port mirroring Cons: Little latency through access from browser, maybe due to overhead from port mirroring Overall Review: A/V was interfering with the switch utility.

Pros: Extensive configuration options, troubleshooting tools Cons: Can’t think of any. Make sure the mounting options and power vs network jack placement is right for you. Overall Review: Very happy with this unit. Web interface included enough error counts and line testing tools that I was able to use it to troubleshoot an issue with another switch on the network.

Pros: No configuration needed if you simply want to add extra ports to your small network. Just plug in one ethernet cable and connect it to your router. Now you have a seven more network ports with Gigabit speed available to connect other computers, printers, VOIP internet phone, HDHomerun Prime digital TV tuner, etc. This is perfect for a home network or small business. Trouble-free and silent. Never gets hot even during extended data backups of 50GB or more to a network attached hard drive. Good transfer speed for all kinds of files including HD video streaming, etc. Our rated internet speed (175Mbps) and burst speed (184Mbps) via Comcast/Xfinity are consistently achieved via ths GS108eV3 switch. LED indicator lights are on the rear where the ethernet cables plug in, so no blinking lights facing towards me on the desk. Cons: None that we’ve found in three and a half years of use. Overall Review: Our home router has the usual four ethernet ports. When adding extra devices at home, we ran out of ports on our router. Adding this Netgear GS108e gave us 7 extra ports. We use 5 of them so far, and everything works fine. We don’t use any QoS, so all data has the same priority. This works OK in our situation. We have a network digital TV tuner (HDHomerun Prime by Silicondust). It takes our cable TV feed. The HDHomerun then connects to our router with a standard ethernet cable, and this makes the TV reception available to any device on our home network. We record TV shows (up to 3 at a time) in a different room using Windows Media Center, and the signal flows there smoothly. We don’t do any big file transfers or online gaming while we’re recording 2 or more TV shows. That might overtax the data flow, but not sure because we never tried it. Basically, the switch seems to have enough bandwidth to handle up to 3 streaming HDTV channels and still be able to use the internet simultaneously in other rooms, no problem. Also, big file transfers, when needed, go smoothly, but not at great speed.

Pros: – Manageable with VLAN support. – Good deal when on sale for $30 – no native PoE power input but 12 VDC input supply within power limits for power over PoE+ with PoE+ splitter such as the EdiMax GP-101ST (if you don’t understand this entire sentence don’t make any assumptions before buying) – No noticeable slowdown based on bridge throughput as others have sometimes indicated. YMMV Cons: – Don’t expect enterprise-level features. Check bidding sites for used enterprise if you want 24 ports of PoE+ for under $100 – Not on sale anymore Overall Review: – Probably should have gotten a few more while they were on sale
